Mid Michigan Safety Council Meeting Minutes March 19, 2008 2:00 P.M. Attendees: Kari Back, Dennis Callison, Bob Carrier, Archie Hoard, Michelle Jones, Caren Pankow, Kenitha Severn, Suchin Shivashonkar, Eldon Sprague, Cheri Umbarger, Ed VanAvery. Minutes from February were reviewed and approved. No comments or changes were made. Treasurers Report: Michelle Jones reported that dues of $10 need to be turned in. It was asked whether Pay Pal could be used to pay dues. Ed VanAvery stated he would check to see if this was possible. Also, Ed stated he would ask whether the maximum transfer of $500 could be changed. Old Business: Discussed latest website updates. Bob Carrier stated that he would be meeting with Dale Majewski next month to discuss the Cadillac, Michigan sub-chapter. There are approximately 15 companies in the industrial park there. New Business: Kari Back welcomed new member, Suchin Shivashonkar from Unified Brands. She also went through the MMSC website so members could review its new look. Briefly discussed Virginia Tech’s Disaster Recovery Plan. Bob Carrier discussed new MIOSHA classes coming next year to Macomb County Community College (MCCC). They will be credited through MCCC and eventually may be used toward an Associates and or Bachelor’s degree in safety. Phases may include Montcalm Community College. Michelle Jones discussed the possibility of her aunt’s workplace (casino in Petoskey) sponsoring the MMSC’s Expo lunch. Ed VanAvery asked whether the Expo might be advertised by the casino as well. Michelle stated she would ask. Kari Back discussed the Expo Topic Matrix and asked that presenters be confirmed as soon as possible. Discussed current topics and tentative presenters already in place. Ed VanAvery stated he would be updating the matrix over the next couple of weeks. He stated he would like to see more Train-the –Trainer topics presented. Topics/presenters still needed: Confined Space, possibly a class or series of classes on Supervisor and Safety responsibility; Kari Back suggested doing the MIOSHA Walkthrough as a topic for presentation. Also, back safety may be added. As soon as topics and presenters are confirmed, the Council can decide how much money will go toward advertising. The idea for a traveling banner was brought up again. Ed VanAvery and Michelle Jones will each check on doing this. Ed stated he would also check with the Michigan State Extension regarding a pesticide application class. Dennis Callison asked for opinions on safety glasses v.s. face shields and prescription inserts. Kenitha Severn stated she would email everyone what her company is using.
